A New Beginning at the FamilySearch Center

Upcoming Events

This coming Thursday, 26 September 2024, at 6 p.m. (yes earlier time now that fall is here), is the FamilySearch Center Fall training lesson. Ward EQ & RS Counselors and T&FH Leaders meet at monthly Thursday training at the same time as their Ward T&FH Consultants to allow the counselors and leaders to come with their ward consultants.

Our three stakes in this center have many student staff members who move in and out each semester. Without a leader to come with them, it could be intimidating. Please consider this in your wards.

The first 10 minutes are conducted by Sis. Clifford to both groups where brief introductions and announcements are made regarding the center. They then break into two groups. Refreshments are served at 7 pm, they those who want individual help are helped for the final 45 minutes.

The Ward EQ & RS Counselors, the T&FH Leaders (or their substitutes) council with each other about training in their wards, and questions they have. Sis. Karen Clifford, teaches them a very quick and easy item they can practice and share in one of their own ward’s upcoming weekly quorums or classes that will help their members achieve the goals that are tracked on their Monthly Ward Temple and Family History Activities Report. It might be logging into FamilySearch once a year via their T&FH phone apps, using Ordinance Ready, how to update a new email or mailing address in your personal settings box, or a new resource in the center, for example. Come and share your unique issues. Ward temple and family history leads are encouraged to share one of their genealogy plans. Either something they have accomplished, or something they could discuss ways to achieve with our help.

Patrons and consultants are encouraged to bring any questions on their own family histories, or documents they need to have help abstracting. A demonstration on how to digitize a photo or document directly from the center computer into their own FamilySearch Memories account will be given in preparation for our field trip to the BYU FamilySearch center in October.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a recipe for your favorite fall refreshments and/or drinks. Better yet, feel free to share something with the entire group.

A Volunteer is needed to help on this Website. Please contact Sister Clifford if you are interested. She can teach you how to bring this WordPress site back to life!!!

August 2024

Holly Cragun taught a lesson about Sources on the Person Page at our Training Meeting in August.

Indexing is being phased out in favor of the Artificial Intelligence Quick Name Review which is found in the new app at FamilySearch called Get Involved.

We welcomed Sharon East Stake who now has four people willing to help at our Tri-Stake FSC: the two original volunteers: Cathy Dawson and Robbie McArthur (who have been helping all along), as well as Paul Lawson and Judy
Crookston. They are all willing to fill a shift every month, instead of every other month.

Remember Ward Leads, if you invite someone else to come with you on your monthly shift at the center, you can learn something new together at FamilySearch by going through the ten lessons taught in May, and the time just flies when your busy.

Monthly July Events

In July, Efrain Contreras of the Provo Peak 8th Ward, and Zina Johnson of the Oak Hills 7th ward both finished their training in the lessons studied in May. They were awarded coupons to https://familytreewebinars.com/ a popular webinar website for genealogy and DNA testing, where you can enjoy a robust offering of live and recorded webinars presented by top speakers. Click on the web site or copy and paste it into your address line, and check it out. There is something for everyone.

Holly Cragun taught a lesson on indexing and the new Get Involved App. She also covered the Overland Databases of the Mormon Pioneers since our training meeting was held the day after Pioneer Day.

People shared fun Reunion Activities including:

Family Trivia Game-found under In-Home Activities in the Activities Tab on FamilySearch

Ice breaker game where everyone has a sheet with statements that another person who fits one of those statements should sign (ie, This person served in the military _______________)

When focusing on one ancestor, can choose a book that was famous for each decade of that ancestor’s life, write down one sentence or paragraph from that book and match the books to the sentences. Could also make a playlist of the #1 songs for each year of that ancestor’s life.

Small town parades with people on vehicles representing the people who settled that town./p>

For small children: hokey pokey, pinatas, glow sticks, ancestral “musical” chairs where everyone is given the name of an ancestor; all those who are holding the name of a particular ancestor whose name is called out must change chairs; one chair is pulled out-whoever is left standing is out. If call out “four generations” or “family history” everyone has to change chairs.

Jeopardy or other games from from Joe Price’s Records Linking Lab at BYU

Memory games and/or puzzles with family pictures.

Oral stories of ancestors.

June’s Monthly Events

The focus of the FamilySearch Center is gathering scattered Israel by creating meaningful experiences with something about family history. We’re not alone-Heavenly Father will guide us. As Stake T&FH Consultants:
1. We can fast and pray to understand our responsibilities.
2. We can also watch or read the transcript of the Temple and Family History Leadership meetings that we watched as a group in Marach. One is given at each RootsTech.
3. As we fulfill our callings, remember that family is first priority, and we may be forced to find sufficient time to fulfill calling.

This was a busy month where Sister Clifford helping consultants one-on-one to solve problems in their own family genealogies since they were so often helping others.

May’s Monthly Events

In May, instructions for finding the ten suggested lessons for all T&FH leaders, consultants, and anyone who wants to use the tools at FamilySearch Family Tree was given. Basically summarized:

Sign in to FamilySearch.

Click on the circled ? mark which is a “Help” icon by your name in the upper right corner of the screen.

When the Helper screen opens, click the words Helper Resources at the bottom of the box.

When the Helper Resources page opens, look for three columns of links at the bottom of the page.

Select the one titled Training which has a list including Learning Resources

Many types of training launch from this area. Please focus on the middle section called Quick Start Learning Lessons and Videos. Each of the blue hypertext links take you to a portion of the lesson. This way, if someone asks you a question, you can click on the answer in the Center and show them how they can get more help spending as much time as they want on these lessons.

With graduations, weddings, and reunions going on, you may have lost the electronic Completion Check List sent out before the last training meeting. The first 20 people who complete the training and turn in their Completion Check List will be given an incentive gift valued at $50.

Holly Cragun taught a lesson on Fold 3 which is one of the websites available for free through the FS Portal available in our center. Learn about the military records covering all the United States Wars and Conflicts. Just in time for the 4th of July. Submit an ancestor who served in the military.

March 2024 Events

Holly Cragun taught a lesson in March that included Irish research as well as merging any duplicate sources found at FamilySearch. Be sure to contact her if you missed this lesson and want help merging. Negotiations are still ongoing regarding the AniMAP program’s availability.

Another free resource on the FSC Portal called Puzzilla was taught by Holly Cragun. This is a 3D descendancy tool that can help people find places in their family tree that may need further research. It’s especially good for people who think all the research on their family lines has been done or who need to find a place to start.

Holly also started and advertised on social media a couple of new Indexing Projects for the Stake.

The BYU Library is open for Family History on Sundays 4 to 8 p.m.

February 2024

Tri-Stake Coordinating Council was Held on the 18th of February.

The FamilySearch Portal topic for this month’s training was Ancestry.com. Holly explained there are two versions: 1) the Institution version (which does not require an account, user name or password and does not have a family tree involved with it-only records), and 2) the regular version that can be accessed from home, requires an account and does have the opportunity to put one’s family tree on it. Both versions have the same records available; the institutional version is free on the portal and most helpful when assisting someone who is a non-member or missionaries or someone who is not signed in to their account.

We were also shown how to do searches by several options and how to look at the actual sources in case further research needs to be done outside of Ancestry (eg, if a record has been indexed but the actual record cannot be seen on Ancestry). She explained Ancestry DNA, communities, and DNA matches. One of the benefits of having a tree on Ancestry is nobody can change your tree and Ancestry will send you hints which sometimes anticipate potential records, photos, and ancestors of yours, including common ancestors of DNA matches.

January 2027

The RootsTech 2024 Watch Party was held on Saturday, January 27, at the Stake Center. There were 192 people in attendance and nearly everyone stayed for all events. People really enjoyed the starting activity in the chapel where people were brought in by the music from last year’s program.

It was a nice atmosphere, and lots of learning, fun, and socializing. Loved having the grouped chairs in the Cultural Hall instead of tables for people to sit at. The presentations by Brother Kwong and Brother Malen went well. In the future it was suggested we might use two small rows in front of their tables.

The displays were great and the activities were enjoyed. Holly helped some people including a non-member and someone from Sharon East stake to get into FamilySearch and hooked them up with their families. Some people also signed up for RootsTech.

It’s probably best to have the Relief Society bring the food, a couple sisters did most of the clean up, may want to get the Elders Quorum Presidents to assign members for that in future. Consider a real Watch Party one year that did not work this year because all the volunteers were already registered and would not have been in town.

It was a wonderful event for pulling in the stake members and introducing many people to the new FamilySearch.

=============================================================
Happy September!
Please take a few minutes this month to mark your assignments, and training dates for September and October 2023.

Please plan on a combined Operation Committee and Ward Leads Meeting with Brian Smith, our High Council Representative and Heather Jenkins, Relief Society Counselor over Temple and Family History on Sunday, 17 September 2023 at 5 p.m. in the room across from the FamilySearch Center at the Provo East Stake Center at 667 North 600 East, Provo, Utah. All Ward Leads, and their ward counselors over Elder’s Quorum and Relief Society Temple and Family History are invited.

FSC September and October Schedules Are Now Posted

They are available just to view, to download or to print. Go to the Consultant Corner at the bottom of the HOME page and click on Work & Meeting Schedule.

Please notify Julianne Guerra, Scheduler, at 678-773-3968 if you have questions. Contact your Ward Temple and Family History Lead if you are willing to serve on a shift assigned to your ward, or if you need to find help on your shift from your ward. Always bring a friend because it is so much fun to learn about the new sources in the center.
